Nature

Surrounded by mountains, among vast meadows and surrounded on all sides by the forest, lies the village of Sorica. Small but warm-hearted. Modest but rich. With its friendly people, unspoilt nature, ancestral monuments, and the intensity of all seasons, Sorica invites you into its arms. During the winter, nature rests under the snow so that it can wake up in spring in all its colours, that it can smell of hay and sunshine in the summer, that it can slowly put down its tools and sit quietly behind the stove in the fall after the work has been done. Homeliness, freedom, and authenticity are present in each corner of our village.

Grohar

Sorica is the birthplace of Ivan Grohar, a painter of light. When you arrive here, you are greeted by his bronze statue, with his hand shading his eyes from the sun so he can enjoy the view. Actually, all the views that he had put into his heart’s memory as motifs here at home, and later, abroad in less friendly places, he put them onto canvas. We are proud to be the home of an amazing artist and human being. With us you can follow his footsteps. You can really take the path that young Ivan walked to school in all weathers, the pastures where he soaked up nature while grazing, or visit the mountain where, on his visits home, he would skilfully mow and entertain himself with scythes and rakes. You can go with him right up to the cradle in his house, or let his spirit touch you and take you into the arts – musical or artistic – at workshops in his birthplace.

People

People are turning houses into homes, fallow land into meadows, fields, and gardens. We work kindly with the land and humbly gather its gifts. We are thankful for all it provides to us. We have lived here for a long time and our attachment to our native land is inherited from the hardworking, loving, smart people who used to live here for centuries before us. Hard work, modesty, a sense of nature, and beauty are still common to the local people today, who conscientiously care for our favourite piece of land under the Sun. We welcome you, we are open and happy to tell you more about where we live and show you the village paths.

Activities

Sorica is one of those villages that moves you with the beauty of its landscape. For some, a rest at one of the village’s viewpoints is enough. For others, it can be just the start of an authentic experience of a village. Instantly you can see the surrounding hills, but it will take a little longer to reach the top of them. But from there, the views are all the more stunning. Sorica is an excellent starting point for active spending of leisure time – hiking, cycling, skiing, a walk among the many larch trees or a visit to the Baroque church, the old fruit drying kiln, the ethnological collection, and the search for the old stone-built trestles which proudly carry the memories of days gone by in the village.

Tourism

In Sorica you will experience a different experience of tourism. In the fast pace of life, it’s good to escape somewhere where time passes differently or where every feeling is like that. In a peaceful environment, living here is connected to nature in all seasons, and you can feel the spirit of hard-working and friendly people. With us, you can sit with a glass of wine and sip nature with all your senses in all its dimensions, in the liveliness of the day and the peace of the night. Our wide culinary offer can take you back in time or make you feel connected with everything that our country has to offer at that moment. Authenticity connects all aspects of tourism, warm-hearted and dedicated people add that extra element that turns an ordinary holiday into an unforgettable experience. The village has a tradition of tourism dating back more than a century, but it is still as authentic as it was in the past.

History

The settlement of the Soriška region began at the end of the 13th century when the Soriška people’s roots were firmly intertwined with the world among the mountains. The first inhabitants were the Tyroleans from Innichen, the prudent and intelligent masters of the world below Ratitovec, who built houses and cultivated the surrounding land over the centuries. From the 13th century until today, the historical line continues. In the history records, you can read all about the origins of the village, the language, the names of the fallow, the beginning of tourism, the first light bulb, the founding of many associations, and more.
